April 9 (TravelAndy): To facilitate travel between India and Bangladesh, a Kolkata-Khulna-Dhaka bus service was flagged off from Kolkata yesterday.

This is a part of several initiatives being taken to strengthen bilateral relations and provide better tourism, road and rail connectivity for citizens of both India and Bangladesh. (Also read: Kolkata budget travel guide)

The bus services are being operated on the Kolkata-Dhaka and Kolkata- Dhaka-Agaratala routes in addition to the newly introduced Kolkata-Khulna-Dhaka bus service. Continue Reading →

Full-service Zoom Air takes flight

Logo squareFebruary 12 (TravelAndy): Zoom Air operated its inaugural flight from New Delhi to Durgapur in West Bengal today.

The full-service airline is scheduled to start regular commercial operations between Delhi and Durgapur via Kolkata from February 15, said reports.

The airline will have daily multiple direct flights from it’s New Delhi hub to Kolkata and Mumbai. It also will have daily flights between Kolkata and Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, the airline said on its website. Continue Reading →

GoAir to connect Hyderabad from Oct 12

GoAIr (1)September 17 (TravelAndy): Indian low-cost carrier GoAir will start operations to and from Hyderabad from October 12.

Tha airline will operate daily flights from Hyderabad to Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Bhubaneswar and Port Blair, said the airline.

Tickets for their flights are already on sale.

The airline currently operates over 140 daily flights and approximately 975 weekly flights across 22 destinations.

Vistara to fly Delhi-Kolkata from June 10

rp_dscn0963-300x215.jpgMay 21 (TravelAndy): Vistara, a Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines joint venture carrier, is set to start two Kolkata-Delhi flights every day from June 10, 2016.

The first will depart from Delhi at 7.20 and reach Kolkata at 9.30. The second daily flight will depart from Delhi at 17.55 and reach Kolkata at 20.10.

The return flights will leave Kolkata at 10.15 and 20.50 and reach Delhi at 12.50 and 23.15 respectively.

The flights will operate on all days of the week except Sundays.

October 22 (TravelAndy): The festival of Durga Puja came to an end today.

Durga Puja is the biggest festival of the Bengalis and it usually takes place over four days in or around October depending on the Hindu lunar calendar. Though the core of the festival is religious, it has now developed into more of a Bengali cultural carnival.

At the end of the festival, the idols are immersed in water bodies. While the idols of private pujas have started today, that of the community pujas will have be immersed either today or Sunday. October 19 (TravelAndy): In an unprecedented move, Kolkata Police have closed a Durga Puja here indefinitely even before the festival officially begins tomorrow.

July 23 (TravelAndy): The iconic Victoria Memorial Hall in Kolkata is undergoing an elaborate makeover and intends to open in all its glory to visitors by March 2017, said reports.

After the renovation, it will serve as an open cultural space, allowing visitors access to parts which are not open to the public now.

This makeover will transform this Kolkata landmark into a unique combination of heritage, architecture and museum, Victoria Memorial Hall curator, Jayanta Sengupta told PTI. Continue Reading →

Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala bus cuts travel time

BUS picJune 7 (TravelAndy): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina flagged off a bus service connecting the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura via Dhaka on Saturday.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was also present at the event in the Bangladesh capital.

The new bus route has significantly shrunk the road distance between the two Indian states to around 500km with one not having to go around Bangladesh. Continue Reading →
