A lot of people I know are uncomfortable about security check at airports.
It’s not really as complicated and tiresome as it seems, you know! If you keep a few things in mind, you can sail through security check pretty smoothly.
The thing to understand is the fact that these rules are in place for the safety of passengers, and you are one of them. So, before you become biased in thinking of how you may be discriminated against and how you are being treated like a criminal, think of this basic fact.
Here are some pointers that will help you sail smoothly through airport security.
Be on time
If security check stresses you out, it makes sense to reach the airport well in time so that you don’t have the added stress of your flight leaving without you while you’re undergoing security check.
Understand the rules
Make efforts on your part to know the rules to avoid disappointment at security check. You cannot carry liquids/pastes/lotions of more than 100ml a container in cabin luggage. So, make sure you place perfumes, big tubes of toothpaste, shaving cream or sunblock in checked-in luggage. Otherwise, they’ll just end up in the big bin at security check. Also, you’re not allowed to carry sharp objects such as scissors and knives.
Ask if in doubt
The security check systems at different airports is different. Some security guys prefer that you open your jacket/shoes/belts, some don’t bother with all that. So, if you’re in doubt, just ask how to go about stuff.
Play along
One time, I was “randomly chosen” for a either a body scan or a hand frisking at a Canada airport. Was it because I was probably the only brown person in the lot of passengers? Was it because the security personnel were racist? I decided not to think on those lines because they were courteous and never rude to me. I chose the body scan and things went pretty smooth and I was done in a few minutes and heading to my boarding gate.
Do not argue
I am not asking you to keep quiet if you think the way the security check is being carried out is way out of line and completely inappropriate. But if they are just being a little bit strict with the check, do not argue with them about why you should have to open your shoes and your belt.
Smile
Don’t appear unnecessarily tensed and perturbed at security check. Make eye contact, flash a friendly smile or just say hi to the people working there. These guys have a stressful job and most people like interacting with friendly people. Consequently, a warm smile can go a long way.
Be confident
If you have nothing to hide and if you’re not trying to smuggle something, you don’t really have too much to worry about. Be confident. Show them what they want, and glide through.
