Tourist fined for touching seal & chasing turtle in Hawaii
August 28 (TravelAndy): A tourist from Alabama has been fined USD1,500 for touching a sleeping Hawaiian monk seal and chasing a turtle, said reports.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, monk seals and sea turtles are considered “part of the identity of the islands and hold a special place in the minds and hearts of the people of Hawaii”.
Signage is put up on touristy beaches asking people not to bother these endangered animals.

Hawaii volcano ‘misinformation’ hits tourism
June 22 (TravelAndy): Misconceptions about the volcanic eruption situation in Hawaii is adversely affecting tourism on the island, Time reported.
Anxious tourists are cancelling reservations even if their destination is located a hundred miles away from the volcano, says a hotel’s representative.
“Once we assured them the lava wasn’t traveling 100 miles to our resort,” concerned visitors usually calm down and decide to keep their reservations, PR director of the Four Seasons Hualalai on Hawaii’s Big IslandSuzuki Morgan Suzuki told Time. Maui beaches closed after ‘shark attack’
April 30 (TravelAndy): Authorities have cleared and closed the waters in south Maui after a 65-year-old woman was found dead off the shore, said reports.
The woman had wounds on her torso implying she was attacked by a shark. But, other than that, there was no other evidence or witness.
“The victim reportedly was snorkelling with two other friends and at some point separated from the others,” the fire department reportedly said. “She was alone when she was found.”
Waters from Big Beach to La Perouse Bay in south Maui have been closed.
