Perth (TAN): Rottnest Island off the Western Australia coast has more to offer to visitors than just quokka selfies.

Visitors to the island can also experience traditional Aboriginal culture as part of new cultural tours made available on the island.

A company called Go Cultural Aboriginal Tours and Experiences offers visitors a walking tour to learn about Rottnest’s past and its spiritual significance to Noongar people.

The tour of of 90 minutes includes a Welcome to Country, traditional sand ceremony, and song and storytelling with an Aboriginal guide. The guide, Walter McGuire, is also one of the owners of the company.

“I’ll tell you our story… the first story of the first people of this land,” says Walter.

Aboriginal culture tourism opportunities are part of a broader plan by the Western Australia’s Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions to encourage authentic cultural experiences and collaborations with Aboriginal businesses across the state.

The addition of tours at popular holiday destinations is a response to demands from domestic and international visitors for authentic cultural experiences, says Tourism Western Australia.
