Wi-Fi in Indian skies likely soon

“The department of telecommunication has already said (informally) the proposal is possible to implement,” The Times of India quoted an aviation official as saying.

At present, only foreign carriers such as Lufthansa, Emirates and Turkish Airlines offer Wi-Fi on international flights in Indian airspace.

“It is a welcome proposal. It is allowed in many other places of the world. In the US these days, it is rare to be on a flight that does not have Wi-Fi,” the report quoted Sanjiv Kapoor, COO of India-based low-cost airline SpiceJet as saying.

However, questions remain on the financial viability on part of the airlines with this move.
